Ann Loughnane and Colin Griffin were the standout performances from an Irish point of view at the European Race Walking Grand Prix at the weekend (June 17th ) held in very warm conditions in Leamington Spa. The European Race walking Cup will be held at this venue next year and the organisers used this occasion as preparation for next years event. Strong fields were assembled in all events and a total of 13 countries took part. Ann Loughnane had another very strong performance in the Womens 20K in her first season out of Junior competition. She raced aggressively and recorded a PB for 10K reaching half way in 47.06. Her final time of 95.54 was her second best performance and earned her 4th place in the race. Colin Griffin and Jamie Costin raced over 20K with Colin hoping to build on his recent PB achieved while winning the Grand Prix in Podebrady. An improvement of 20 seconds would give him the qualification standard for the European Championships. He started strongly and was on schedule until half way when the conditions began to take their toll. Colin still managed 85.09 which is his second best performance ever and also earned him 4th place Jamie Costin continued his return to form after the injury suffered at the Athens Olympics. He recorded a solid 89.35 for 7th place and hopes to improve steadily as the season progresses. Laura Reynolds was our representative in the Junior Womens 10K. Laura competed in the World Youth championships last year and the World Cup earlier this year. She also finished fourth in a time of 54.55.
