Athletics Ireland have selected a team of 5 athletes to compete at the European Throwing Cup to be held in Nicosia, Cyprus on March 15th & 16th
Paris Olympian Nicola Tuthill (UCD AC) will be a leading contender in the U23 Women’s Hammer, having medalled at last year’s event in the same age group, although she will have significant opposition from a high class field.
Fellow Olympian Eric Favors (Raheny Shamrock AC) will be looking to threaten his Irish record in the Senior Men’s Shot Put. After several European indoor competitions, he will return to his USA base to fine tune for this competition.
Niamh Fogarty (Raheny Shamrock AC) has made great progress over the last year since relocating to Denmark and will definitely have the long-standing Irish Discus record in her sights in 2025. This competition will give her a great opportunity.
Recent World U20 Javelin medallist Oisin Joyce (Lake District AC) will open up his 2025 season in Nicosia and will be looking to put down a marker in the new age group and gain further experience leading into the European U23 Championships later in the year.
Anna Gavigan (LSA) has put in some great training over the winter and is ready to make a breakthrough this year. She will also be looking forwards to the European U23 Champoinships later in the year and will be looking to make gains towards that target.
Athletics Ireland views the European Throwing Cup as a key competition which contributes to the progression of Irish Throwers. Athletics Ireland intends to support athlete’s participation at the European Throwing Cup to reflect our aim of improving our standing in the European Team Championships, and to assist in developing throwers who are progressing towards European U20 & U23 Championships, European Championships or Olympic Games qualification.
