Ferrybank Athletic Club travelled to Cottbus, Germany last week-end to contest the European Champions Club Cup for Juniors for the first time. After an action packed and exciting day , Ferrybank emerged victorious at the end of the day by just 3 points from Bialystok, Poland with the host club Cottbus, Germany taking the third position with 85 points. The competition required each team to enter one athlete in each of the nineteen athletic events and ferrybank A.C. secured seven event wins, three second placings, and four third placings. Winners for Ferrybank were Jessie Barr ( high jump), Kelly Proper (long jump), mairead Deevy (400m), Mary O Connor (800m), Patricia Barry (3000m) , mairead Murphy (100m hurdles) and the 4 X 100m relay team. Second placings were secured by Kalyn Sheehan (400m hurdles), Niamh Ryan (1500m) and the 4 X 400m relay team. Bronze medals were won by Niamh Whelan (200m), Grainne Quinn (3000m steepelechase), Jessie barr (triple jump) and Kelly Proper (Javelin). Sinead Donnelly ( discus), Mairead Murphy (shot), Haley Murphy (100m & hammer) all performed adding vital points to the team score. The club were up against top class competition from the best junior clubs from, Poland, germany, Slovakia, Netherlands, Belgium and Greece and were placed outside the leading three teams for much of the day, only finally taking the lead after 17 events. Great credit is due to this wonderful group of athletes who will now be promoted to group B of the competition for 2007. Team captain Mairead Deevy was presented the European Champion Cup on Saturday night.
