The GloHealth Juvenile Inter County Relay Cross Country Championships took place in the scenic Kilbroney Park, Co. Down on Sunday, 1st of March. An exciting programme of relays preluded the senior races with athletes competing in the U12 and U14 age categories. Each team fielded four runners who had to complete the required distance of 500m.
U12
The girl’s U12 race was an extremely close affair with teams from Tipperary, Kilkenny and Meath fielding strong quartets. It wasn’t until the final leg that Tipperary sprinted clear to win the title with Meath and Kilkenny next across the line.
In the boy’s U12 race there was clear cut win for the Meath team as the spirited group of young athletes gave it their all in pursuit of the victory.
U14
Carlow proved the decisive winners of the U14 girl’s contest with powerful display of cross country running, other counties featuring in the programme included teams from Cavan and Louth. The boy’s U14 race came down to battle between Donegal and Louth on the final 500m leg. The Donegal team took the baton in the lead with Louth’s final leg runner in close proximity. After a tremendous effort by both athletes over the final 100m Donegal came out on top with Louth having to settle for second place.
