Good start for Irish in Gyor
It was a good first morning for the Irish at the European U18 Athletics Championships in Gyor today (July 5).
Sarah Glennon (Mullingar Harriers) and Emily MacHugh (Naas) got Irish interest underway in the girls’ 5km race walk. Glennon finished 12th in 25:36.73 while MacHugh was unfortunately disqualified.
Simone Lalor (St Laurence O’Toole) ran 56.96 in the heats of the 400m and just missed out advancing to the semi-finals by once place.
Miranda Tcheutchoua (Lusk) finished 9th in group B of the hammer and 21st overall with a best throw of 58.31m.
It was good news for the Irish in the boys’ and girls’ 100m with all three athletes advancing. Conor Morey (Leevale) finished fourth in heat 2 in 11.05, advancing as a fastest qualifier, while Israel Olatunde (Dundealgan) finished third in heat 3 in 10.77 to qualify automatically.
Patience Jumbo-Gula (St Gerard’s Dundalk) had a brilliant win in heat 4 in 11.80 into a -1.7 wind. All three will compete in this evening’s semi-finals.
Conor Cusack (Lake Districts) finished 9th in Group A of the javelin with a best of 63.07m.
Also competing this evening will be Sophie O’Sullivan (Ballymore Cobh) and Molly Brown (MSB) in the heats of the girls’ 800m
There is a duo also in the girls’ long jump with Sophie Meredith (St Mary’s) in Group A and Ruby Millet (St Abban’s) in Group B.
The 1500m for boys has the qualification of first 4 and next 4 fastest for the final with Cian McPhillips (Longford) in heat 1 and Brian Maguire (DSD) in heat 2.
