It is with great regret that the organisers of the Great Ireland Run have today announced that the Deep Heat Deep Freeze Great Ireland Run will not take place in 2020.

Dermot Nagle, Race Director said: “We know this is extremely disappointing for all runners, and we thank everyone who had entered up until this point for their patience in allowing us to examine every possible option available to us. We made the difficult decision in the best interest of the health and wellbeing of all those involved in the event. We thank all of our participants, suppliers, volunteers and sponsors for their continued support, and we look forward to making the 2021 edition a real celebration of running”.

All entries for the 2020 Deep Heat Deep Freeze Great Ireland Run will be valid for the 2021 event. For those who do not wish to avail of this, a full refund option is available.

Athletics Ireland CEO, Hamish Adams commented: “We are all disappointed that one of the top recreational road races in the country, as well as our own National 10km Championships will not take place in 2020. Postponing this year’s race is the right and responsible decision and we can all look forward to a fantastic event when the Great Ireland Run returns in 2021. We must say a huge thank you to our sponsors Deep Heat and Deep Freeze who have remained committed to the event throughout.”

The organisers of the Deep Heat Deep Great Ireland Run want to make sure we all stay active and motivated over the summer months, and they are delighted to announce that the Deep Heat Deep Freeze Great Ireland Virtual Run (July 20th – 26th) is now open for registration. The event is free to enter, with the option to purchase a race t-shirt and medal. You can find further information here.

The organisers also want to see AAI clubs get involved in the virtual edition of the race and have offered a team prize fund based on the submitted times. The fastest team will be awarded €300 based on the aggregate of four times. The second placed team will be awarded €200, and the third placed team €100. There will be separate prizes for both male and female teams.  Clubs can enter any number of athletes provided they are registered with AAI within the year 2020. AAI will calculate the winning teams through the entry software, with results to be announced on Monday July 27th.
