GRIGGS BREAKS IRISH U23 3000M RECORD

10 July 2024

Nick Griggs (Candour Track Club) broke Darragh McElhinney’s Irish U23 3000m record at last night’s Cork City Sports that were held at the newly renovated Munster Technological University track in Bishopstown.

The 19-year-old from Tyrone clocked a time of 7:41.68 to knock over a second off the previous record finishing third in a fiercely competitive race.

The time moves Griggs to tenth on the Irish Senior All-Time List for the event.

Elsewhere at the meet Sarah Lavin (Emerald AC) continued her preparations for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris winning the Athletics Ireland Women’s 100m Hurdles in 12.83 seconds (+1.8m/s).

Louise Shanahan (Leevale AC) impressed in front of a home crowd to finish second in the Women’s 800m in 2:02.65.

Another Cork athlete Phil Healy (Bandon AC) finished fourth in the Women’s 100m in 11.45 seconds before later returning for the 200m where she clocked a season’s best of 23.34, placing fifth.

One place behind was Sophie Becker (Raheny Shamrock AC) who stormed to a personal best of 23.51 seconds.

Fellow Raheny athlete Mark Smyth was third overall in the Men’s 200m, also recording a new PB of 20.60 seconds.

Cathal Doyle (Clonliffe Harriers AC) continued his streak of placing in the top two in every race he’s ran this outdoor season, placing second in the Men’s Mile in a PB of 3:54.48. Twelve men broke the four minute barrier in the race, meaning the number of sub-four minute miles ran in Ireland has now exceeded 400.

In the field, Nicola Tuthill (Bandon AC) impressed her home crowd finishing third in the Women’s Hammer Throw with a best effort of 69.90m. Reece Ademola (Leevale AC) won the Men’s Long Jump with a best leap of 7.71m.
