Healy heads super day in Santry
Sarah Healy (Holy Child Killiney) headed a great day of racing at the Irish Life Health Leinster Schools Cross Country Championships at a sun-soaked Santry Demesne today (February 21).
Healy was peerless as she won the senior girls’ 2,500m with ease ahead of Niamh Ni Chiarda (Colaiste Iosagain) and Aoibhinn McGoldrick (Holy Faith Clontarf) in second and third. Castleknock CC came out on top in the team standings.
Sean O’Leary (St Aidan’s CBS) defended his senior boys’ 6,000m crown in a great race with Jamie Battle (Colaiste Mhuire Mullingar). Battle caught back up with O’Leary but lost out in a sprint finish. He had the consolation of guiding his school Colaiste Mhuire Mullingar to the team title. Efrem Gidey (Le Cheile Tyrellstown) was third.
Orla Reidy (Maynooth PP) has a scintillating sprint finish to win the intermediate girls’ 3,500m ahead of Caoimhe O’Brien (Loreto College Mullingar). Alex Murphy (Holy Family Newbridge) rounded out the top three with Loreto Kilkenny winning the team title.
Louis O’Loughlin (Moyle Park College) was an impressive winner of the intermediate boys’ 4,500m ahead of John Fanning (Belvedere College) in second and Sean Donoghue (St Declan’s Cabra) in third. Belvedere were strong winners of the team title.
Even stronger in the junior girls’ 2,000m were Loreto Kilkenny winning the team title with 7 points. Fiona Dillon led the light blue team home in first closely followed by her schoolmate Hannah Keogh in second who fell at the start of the race. Ava O’Connor (Scoil Chriost Ri Portlaoise) was third.
The junior boys’ 3,000m was won by Morgan Clarkson (Colaiste Eoin) with Adam Condon (Ard Scoil Ris) in second and Joe Byrne (Gorey CS) third. Salesian College won the team title.
Sophie Quinn (Mount Sackville) won the minor girls’1500m clearly with St Peter’s Dunboyne winning the team prize. In the minor boys’ 2,000m Diarmuid Fagan (Colaiste Mhuire Mullingar) won a close tussle with St Kieran’s College Kilkenny running impressively as a team to strike gold.
The top 15 individuals and top three teams qualified for the Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships which take place in Waterford IT on March 10th.
