The 2014 World 50k Race Walk Champion Rob Heffernan has been named captain of the Irish team for the European Track and Field Championships in Zurich, Switzerland.

Experience

Heffernan has represented Ireland internationally for 16 years at the Olympic Games, European and World Championships. His finest moment came last August when he struck Gold at the World Track and Field Championships in Moscow.

Heffernan competes in Zurich along with 27 other Irish athletes as the championships begin on Tuesday, 12th of August and conclude on Sunday the 19th.

"I am honoured to have been asked to be the team captain," said Heffernan

"I hope to lead by example when I compete in Zurich.”

Irish team manager Patsy McGonagle said Heffernan is "one of Ireland’s greatest ever athletes" and added: "He will do a brilliant job of motivating and looking out for his team mates.”
