All the weekend action - Updated It was a tremendous weekend for Irish athletes competing in Leiria, Talinn, Bedford and Mannheim. Many will return home well satisfied with their day’s work, while others will wonder why the magic deserted them, temporarily we hope. Eileen O’Keeffe continued her assault on the world stage with a clear-cut victory in the hammer, finishing with a best of 69.59m Deirdre Byrne had an excellent third place finish in the 1,500m, close enough to the winner. Maria McCambridge added another third place finish in the 5,000m, while Derval O’Rourke continued the trend by finishing third in the 100m hurdles. The team rounded off the day with a resounding win in the 4X400m The men’s 4X400m relay team combined well to win their event, while second place finishes came from Mark Christie in the 3,000m and Ian McDonald in the 110m hurdles. Joe Warne added a third place finish in the 800m, making it a good weekend for middle distance new-comers. In Mannheim Ciara Everard clocked a magnificent new PB in the 800m with a time of 2:06.49 for fourth place in a blanket finish. Curtis Woods once again showed tremendous promise with a 21.79, just short of the World junior qualifying standard of 21.64 for 200m. Jessie Barr made no mistake in the 400m hurdles to win from clubmate Kalyn Sheehan and her time qualifies her for the Worlds along with Kalyn. Niamh Whelan set a smashing new PB when winning the 200m in 23.91. Helena Crossan, Ireland's top female ultra athlete, had a very convincing win in the Night of Flanders 100km in Torhout, Belgium on Saturday. Crossan, the Donergal native, posted a world class 7:53:41 to demolish the race field. Her time was less than a minute outside her Irish record of 7:52:45, a time she set when finishing 10th at the World 100km last year. Torhout will host the 2010 World 100km. Ireland 4th in World Youths Challenge Michael Dowling of West Wicklow led home a strong performance by the Irish boys team in the World Youths Challenge in Italy. Dowling was 4th in the Leinster schools 5000m and was unfortunate not to qualify for the All Ireland schools where Leinster had a clean sweep. He made amends with a great run in 9th position in Italy in very hot conditions. He was supported by Emmet Jennings (17th) and John Harrington (25th) to produce the best Irish team performance in mountain running in some time. The Irish girls team also ran very well to finish 5th. Gayle Finn from Duhallow led them home in 19th ahead of Eimear Tangney (24th) and Daisy Murray (26th). Aine McCann (2nd) and Laura Hannigan (16th) had good runs in the cadette race. Boys team 1. Italy 9 (2 P. Ruatti, 3 F Viviani, 4 A DeBiasi) 2. Russia 39 (1 A Rusakov, 5 A Zvokov, 33 S Mokin) 3.
