Brian Gregan equals Irish junior 400m record Irish athletes were well spread out today with the European Cup bringing the men's team to Talinn, the women's team to Leiria and the juniors to Mannheim. there were excellent perfomances at each venue but pride of place must go to Brian Gregan who equalled the Irish record when he finished third in the 400m in Mannheim. Kennedy's 46.70 time is in the books since 2000, but surely it is only a matter of time before Gregan betters it, and what better place to do it than at the World junior championships next month. Curtis Woods, running in his first international, clocked 48.21, just outside the qualifying standard. Sandra Lawlor added her name to the list of World junior qualifiers with a time of 14.17 in the 100m hurdles. Paul Hession and Paul McKee got the Irish men's challenge off to a flier when they both won their events, Hession the 100m in 10,30 and McKee the 400m in 46.68. Ciaran O'Lionaird took second place inthe 5,000m and David McCarthy (WW) was third in the 1,500m, while the 4X100m relay team were second. Paralympics bound Jason Smith smashed his PB in the invitational 100m with 10.53. The men's team are in third place at the end of day 1. In Leiria Michelle Carey had an excellent 2nd place finish in the 400m hurdles, while Marion Andrews smashed her PB when finishing third in the 400m. Roisin McGettigan was involved in a terrific tussle in the steeplechase and finished a good third. European Cup Talinn M 100 m Wind: +2,1 1. Paul Hession 1983 IRL 10,30 2.
