International Teams Announced

European Cup teams and Junior team for Mannheim international Athletics Ireland have announced their European Cup Team for the 21-22nd June. The Women’s team will compete in Leiria, Portugal in the 1st League Group A, the team contains many of the team bound for Beijing. Derval O’Rourke will compete in the 100m Hurdles and the 4x100m relay, Joanne Cuddihy has recovered from a recent knee injury and is named in the 400m and 4x400m relay. World Championships steeplechase finalists Roisin McGettigan & Fionnuala Britton are named in the 3000sc & 3000m respectively. Ireland’s top field eventer Eileen O’Keeffe will compete in the hammer. The 4x400m relay fresh from an Olympic qualification attempt in Turin will again challenge the National Record in Portugal. The Men’s team will compete in the 2nd League Group A in Tallin, Estonia. In form Paul Hession steps downs from his favoured distance to compete in the 100m while David Gillick also steps down a distance to compete in the 200m. Thomas Chamney will still be chasing the elusive ‘A’ standard in the 800m with young David McCarthy from Waterford competing in his first senior international over 1500m. The men’s 4x400m relay team will also have Beijing qualification on their mind with a strong squad named. The are several events that selection has been left to be confirmed, selection for these events will be finalized on Monday 16th June. European CupAthletics Ireland are pleased to announce the team for Mannheim, Germany Junior International on 21-22nd June. The team has been selected to give athletes who either have or are very close to World Junior Qualification standards the opportunity to compete at a high international level. The team includes two exciting talents at 400m in Brian Gregan and Curtis Woods. European Youth Olympic medallist Niamh Whelan leads a 4x100m Junior relay team that includes an emerging group of female sprinters. Ferrybank’s Kalyn Sheehan and Jessie Barr will both compete in the 400m Hurdles. Middle distance star Ciara Mageean will take a big step forward in competing in the 1500m.
