Irish athletes to take on world class opposition in Athlone
Canada's Shawn Barber and Melissa Bishop are two of the star attractions at the Athlone International in the AIT International Arena, Athlone tomorrow (February 17th) and will be aired live by Irish TV.
Bishop, the world silver medallist over 800m in Beijing last summer, will look to break the two minute barrier with Ireland's Katie Kirk (Queen's) looking to put in a good performance.
The women’s 1500m sees Germany's steeplechase bronze medallist Gese Krause toe the line with Ireland's Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle) and Rose-Anne Galligan (Newbridge) leeading the home challenge. World Junior Champion Mary Cain (USA) is also down to compete with Kenya's Nancy Chepkwemoi looking like the favourite
Amy Foster (City of Lisburn) and Phil Healy (Bandon) will be tooking to take on the might of the US sprinters in the women's 60m with Barbara Pierre and Cleo Van Buren the leading lights. Ciara Neville (Emerald) will look to gain experience against top class opposition.
The women's 60m hurdles is loaded with Sharika Nelvis and Kristi Castlin of the USA set to put on a masterclass of sprint hurdling. Sarah Lavin (UCD) is improving throughout the season and will hope for a personal best.
In the men’s events, the 400m looks set to be an exhibition run by Czech Republic's Pavel Maslak. The world and European indoor champion oozes class and Clonliffe Harriers Brian Gregan will look to hang on to his coat tails for as long as possible. World medallist Chris Brown (Bahamas) is also in the two-lap event that always produces thrills and spills.
In the 60m Marcus Lawler (SLOT) will have it all to do against the likes of Harry Aikines Aryeetey (Great Britain), Churanday Martina (Netherlands),Diondre Batson, D’Angelo Cherry (both USA).
Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock) had a big breakthrough at the GloHealth AAI Indoor Games running 1:48.2 and he faces formidable opposition in Great Britain's Michael Rimmer and Guy Learmonth. Rimmer boasts a 1:43 outdoor personal best along with European medals and global finals to his name.
The meet will look to end on a high once more with the men's mile with world class runners including Dawit Wolde (Ethiopia) and Hillary Ngetich (Kenyan). Eoin Everard (Kilkenny City Harriers) leads the Irish charge and will home to become the first Irish man to break the 4 minute mile indoors on Irish soil. Irish Runner contributor Joe Warne (Doheny) is also in the field and looking to break the barrier.
In the field events Shawn Barber will look to put on a show to rival Mutaz Essa Barshim's high jump last year. The world champion will look to break 6 metres and will be a spectacle for Irish fans.
Newly minted national junior triple jump record holder Jordan Hoang (Tullamore Harriers) will get to experience high level competition against Arpinder Singh (India), Viktor Iastrebov (Ukraine) and Karol Hoffman (Poland).
