Irish clubs secure six top-tens at European Club Cross Country Championships

Irish clubs claimed six excellent top-ten finishes at the European Champions Clubs Cup Cross Country (ECCC) which took place in Albufeira. The Irish clubs battled close to 100 other European clubs around the fast and undulating course on Sunday morning, Feb 2nd.

There were strong performances in the senior races with North Belfast Harriers and CNDR Track Club leading the charge in the men’s race, securing 11th and 17th team placings respectively. Both teams packed well but it was Conall McClean (CNDR) who was the first across the line for a 27th place individual finish.

Letterkenny (9th) secured a top-ten finish in the seniors women’s race, lead home by national cross country champion Ann Marie McGylnn who added another impressive display to her ever expanding CV to finish in 9th place overall. Leevale AC would finish in 13th in the team standings, led home by Hannah Steeds in 28th.

Clonliffe Harriers and Lagan Valley enjoyed a superb day with the clubs represented in both U20 Men’s and Women’s races.

Emily Bolton was the top Irish finisher on the day, securing a brilliant 5th placed finish in the U20 race. Bolton’s teammate Lorraine O’Connor (8th) also secured a brilliant top-ten as Clonliffe ran to a 5th place finish in the team standings.

Lagan Valley finished 8th overall with the scoring team of Katie Graham, Olivia Morgan, and Chloe Young packing superbly throughout.

Clonliffe’s U20 men would secure 7th place overall in the men’s race, while Oisin McGloin was the first Irish athlete home in 20th as he helped his club Lagan Valley to 15th overall.

The mixed relay rounded out the Irish involvement on the day with the Dublin City Harriers team of Pierre Murchan, Niamh Carr, Philip Marron, Edel Monaghan crossing in 5th, with Dublin rivals Dundrum South Dublin crossing in 7th thanks to fine performances from Joseph Hastings, Emma McEvy Jamie Byrne, and Eimear Maher.
