Ireland walked away from last weekend’s SIAB Track and Field meet in Grangemouth, Scotland with a total of twenty-four medals finishing second in the medal table behind England.
Amongst the highlights from an Irish team perspective were an impressive double victory in the Boys and Girls walks.
Matthew Newell and Savanagh O’Callaghan both claimed gold. O’Callaghan was the only Irish female athlete to reach the top of the podium and was rewarded for her efforts as she was voted the female performance of the meet.
Luke Fitzmaurice and Sinead Maher both walked themselves to silver medals.
Ireland also landed two field event golds as Thomas Williams won the Boys Hammer Throw and Corey Scanlon triumphed in the Boys Discus.
Tomas Hanlon and Ashleigh McCardle claimed bronze medals in the Shot Put, while Andrew Scanlon and Aoife Callan both came third in the Javelin.
In the Boys Pole Vault, Alex Neff was a clear winner of the bronze medal, while Caoimhe Gallen took silver in the Girls Hammer Throw.
Kilkenny’s Molly Daly battled it out for a medal with Clare’s Caoimhe Byrne O’Connell in the Girls 300m Hurdles. Daly just edged her Irish teammate out by 0.02 to take bronze.
Two Irish athletes mounted the podium in the Boys 800m with multiple-time national champion Caolan McFadden taking silver just ahead of teammate Senan O’Reilly who won bronze.
Over 100m Belfast youngster Rus Veikune stormed to an impressive bronze medal, just 0.01 off silver, while stepping up in distance, Noah Harris from Wicklow finished second in the Boys 3000m.
Carlow athlete Emily Lawlor claimed another medal for the Irish team in the 80m Hurdles, while over 1500m two Irish athletes medalled. Conor Sherwin and Emily Bolton both won bronze medals in their respective metric mile races.
Cork’s Caoimhe Flannery fought hard all the way to the line to win a brilliant bronze in the Girls 1500m Steeplechase.
Both Irish Boys and Girls 4x100m relay teams took excellent bronze medals, behind England and Wales on both occasions.
The Boys 4x400m relay finished in third, while a spirited effort from the Girls 4x300m team saw them just edge Scotland in the closing stages to win silver.
