Zak Irwin (Sligo AC) was in scintillating form at the International Grand Prix in AIT, International Arena in Athlone on Wednesday, 18th of February. Irwin ran 6.88 seconds in the 60m heats to book his place in the final later that evening. The time for Irwin equalled the Irish Junior record held by Keith Doherty (Tallaght AC) and Darragh Graham (Slí Cualann AC)
Irwin went even quicker in the final recording a time of 6.83 seconds to hold the record out right. It was an encouraging performance for Irwin in a year where the European Junior Athletics Championships (16th-19th July) in Sweden is the likely target.
Other Irish athletes competing on the night included Kelly Proper (Ferrybank AC), Proper had a best of 6.06m in the Long Jump and ran 7.44 seconds in the heats of the 60m. Danny Mooney (Letterkenny AC) was the best of the Irish in the featured one mile race where he finished third in a time of 4.03.88. Niall Tuohy (Ferrybank AC) also finished third in the men’s 800m in a time of 1.50.00.
Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle AC) finished second in the women’s 1,500m in a time of 4.15.04. Brian Murphy (Crusaders AC) made his 2015 season debut on the boards finishing third in the 400m in a time of 48.71.
GloHealth Senior Indoor Championships
Next up for the majority of these athletes will be the GloHealth Senior Indoor Championships which take place this weekend (21st/22nd) in AIT International Arena, Athlone.
