IRISH SUCCESS AT SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL COMBINED EVENTS

The sixteen strong team who represented the Irish Schools Athletics Association at the Combined Event International in Glasgow, Scotland last weekend brought home a number of medals when they returned to Dublin Airport.

 

All four teams medalled with two individual athletes also making the podium.

 

In the Junior Girls event Emer Purtill (Mungret College) won gold with 3578 points. Her strongest performance came in the Shot Put where she threw a best of 14.06m.

 

Along with Purtill, the strong efforts of Cara Ryan (Loretto Clonmel, 7th), Aine Frawley (St. Mary’s Charleville, 11th) and Nicole Flanagan (Mercy College Sligo, 13th) ensured Ireland claimed team silver.

 

Tara O’Connor (St. Vincent’s Dundalk) won the Intermediate Girls event. O’Connor particularly showed her class in the High Jump where she cleared a personal best of 1.81m, on her way to the title. In total she amassed 3809 points.

 

Ruby Cummins (Coláiste na Toirbhirte, 4th), Meabh Purtill (Mungret College, 11th) and Ellis McHugh (Waterpark College, 13th) all played key roles as the Irish team also won gold.

 

There was further gold medal success from the Junior Boys team. Their top finisher was Arron Carroll Whelan (St. Peter’s College Dunboyne) who came fourth overall with 3177 points.

 

Just behind him was Daniel Redmond (Good Counsel New Ross) who finished fifth. Jack O’Coilean (Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí) was seventh, while Kyle Byrne Ward (Patrician Secondary School Newbridge) was twelfth.

 

The Intermediate Boys team also medalled, winning bronze. Daniel Downey (St. Mary’s CBS Portlaoise) led the team, with a fifth place finish (3636 points).

 

Jack Keating (Presentation College Carlow, 8th), Wojciech Fraczek (Midleton CBS, 9th) and Conor McDonagh (St. Attracta’s Tubbercurry, 10th) rounded out the team.
