David Gillick has been included in a team of 13 athletes to compete in the European Under 23 Championships on July 14th to 17th in Erfurt, Germany. David’s seasonal best of 45.93 sees him ranked second on the list behind Britain’s much improved Daniel Tobin who has run 45.01. David McCarthy is also named for the 400 metres and he will be seeking to re-discover the form that lead him to 5th place in the World Indoors in Birmingham. Paul Hession will be seeking to improve on his seasonal best of 20.95 and will not be short of opposition as there are no fewer than 10 higher ranked athletes. Anna Boyle and Ailish McSweeney are both nominated for the 100 Metres with Joanne Cuddihy named for the 400 Metres. Joanne’s winter preparations have been hampered by injury but she is now returning to full fitness. Mark Christie moves down to 1500 Metres where he will join Liam Reale who has also been nominated for the 800 with Thomas Chamney. Ciaran O’Connell clocked 1:48.13 on the last day to also qualify in dramatic fashion for the 800 Metres. Mullingar’s Martin Fagan has a possible double assignment in the 5000/10000 metres with Joe Sweeney better known as a cross country man to run in the 5000. Fionnuala Britton becomes the first Irish Woman to compete at a Major Championship in the 3000m steeplechase where she is currently ranked 8th U23 in Europe.
