Athletics Ireland have selected a team of twelve athletes to compete in the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki starting on August 5th. Included in the team are athletes who won national titles over the week-end; Robert Heffernan, Olive Loughnane, Karen Shinkins, Derval O'Rourke, Eileen O'Keefe and Peter Coghlan. Also included are Paul Hession and James Nolan who both missed the championships over the week-end. They will be competing in the Dublin International next Saturday July 30th in Santry to confirm their fitness. Tomas Coman who retained his 400 title yesterday was nominated by the selectors for the 400 spot. After considering the matter overnight he has decided not to travel to Helsinki which paves the way for European Indoor Champion David Gillick to take up the 400 spot. David did not compete in the championships over the week-end but is expected to compete in next Saturday's Dublin International. Roisin McGettigan will be the first Irish woman to compete in the 3000 Metres Steeplechase which is included in the helsinki Programme for the first time. Maria McCambridge is nominated for the 5000 and Marie Davenport is named for the 10,000.
