U20 relay team on fire in Lausanne
The Irish U20 women's 4x100m smashed the junior record at the Lausanne Diamond League last night finishing 6th in world class competition.
Running out of lane one the quartet of Molly Scott (SLOT), Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport), Gina Akpe Moses (Blackrock Louth) and Ciara Neville (Emerald) sprinted to an impressive 44.31 seconds to eclipes the previous record of 45.08. The clocking makes it the fifth fastest ever overall by an Irish women's 4x100m team and it places them second on European U20 list as they head to the European U20 Athletics Championships in Grosseto, Italy in two weeks time (July 20th-23rd).
O'Connor scores excellent bronze at Euro Combined
Meanwhile last weekend, Kate O’Connor (St Gerard’s Dundalk) finished a brilliant third at the European Combined Events Team Championships 2nd League, in Monzon, Spain. O’Connor O’Connor, 16, recorded a personal best score of 5,632 which is just marginally behind the Irish record of 5,669 set by Elizabeth Morland (Cushinstown AC) in the Canaries last month. Both will compete at the European U20 Championships.
Amy McTeggart (Boyne) battled to a 16th place finish.
In the men’s competition Michael Bowler (Enniscorthy) surpassed 7,000 points for the first time to finish in fifth place with a personal best of 7,032 points. 1500m. Shane Aston (Trim) tallied 6,564 points to finish 13th and in 19th was Rolus Olusa (Clonliffe Harriers) with 5,885 points.
