Keelan Kilrehill (Moy Valley AC) and Grace Lynch (Dundrum South Dublin AC) claimed the national senior titles at today’s 10 mile championships which took place in conjunction with Biofreeze Irish Runner 10 Mile (July 21st).
Over 1700 runners completed today’s race with close to 600 of those battling it out for national honours around the iconic Phoenix Park surroundings.
Kilrehill took his first senior men’s road title in impressive fashion, crossing the finish in total isolation in a time of 49:56.
Speaking after the race, Kilrehill said: “It was my first taste of the roads and I enjoyed it. It was tougher than I thought it was going to be, but I ground it out at the end. That’ll be the end of the season for the summer, until I get back into some cross country training. I’ll slowly move onto the roads next year, but this was the first taste of it”.
Silver and bronze went to Gerry Forde (Kilkenny City Harriers) 51:11 and Jamie Fallon (Craughwell AC) 51:12 who had a brilliant battle up the home straight.
Clane AC looked dark-horses for the senior men’s team title and superb packing from the Kildare athletes saw them walk away with the national gold thanks to Stephen Conroy (53:20), Brian Conroy (53:21), and Gavin Kelly (53:56).
Lynch won the senior women’s title in a winning time of 56:58 having stretched well clear of her rivals from the five-mile marker.
Speaking after the race, Lynch, who was thrilled with her first senior title said: “It’s brilliant, it’s great to get a national title because they don’t come around that often, so I’m thrilled. This is my last race of the season, so I’ll take a down week now to rest and recover before going into a marathon build for my autumn marathon”.
Heather Murphy (St Michael’s AC) followed Lynch home in 59:39, backing up her silver in the five mile last month. Fiona Roche (Raheny Shamrock AC) secured bronze and in doing so led Raheny to the senior women’s team title to cross in 1:00:54. Ciara Brady (1:03:54) and Maria Dolan (1:10:23) would follow their Raheny teammate home to finish with over three-minutes to spare over their closest rivals in Donore and Dunboyne who took silver and bronze respectively.
