Steeple record for Tomas Cotter - Donegal results Another good day of schools’ athletics at Santry when the second day of the KitKat Leinster Schools’ athletics programme was rolled out. The highlight of the meeting was the performance of Tomas Cotter, St Mary’s Dundalk, in the Senior Boys’ 2,000m Steeplechase in a record-breaking time of 5.57.23. Tomas, who won the 1,500m on Saturday, showed how good a prospect he is when breaking a record set in 1984 by over 5 secs. Another performance of note was the double achieved by Marco Pons, CBS Wexford, in the Junior Boys’ Shot and Discus. Marco broke the record set in 1981 in the discus with a throw of 48.70m. He, subsequently, heaved the shot out to 14.55m. Sarah Buggy from Castlecomer CS pushed the Junior Girls’ Triple Jump record out to 10.50m. Doubles were recorded by Rachel Healy, Alexandra College, in the Junior 75m Hurdles and Long Jump, Sarah Murray, Mount Temple, in Junior Girls’ sprints, Emma Daly, St Leo’s Carlow, in the Junior Girls’ Shot and Discus, Peter Collins, St Finian’s Mullingar, in the Junior Boys’ Shot and Discus and by Ciaran Greene, St MacDara’s CC, in the Junior Boys’ sprints. The Junior, Intermediate and Senior age groups are now preparing for the KitKat All-Ireland Schools’ Track & Field set to take place in Tullamore on Saturday 31st May.
