The final two days of the course were delivered by West and North West R.D.O’s Paul McNamara and Eamon Harvey who both emphasised proper practice and detailed planning when delivering athletics programmes to the teenage athlete. Eamon Harvey, at the conclusion of the course on Sunday evening, congratulated and thanked the coaches and emphasised the important role they will play. ‘You have a vital and important role to play in the development of our sport going forward. You will introduce and coach athletics at grass roots level, you will have a vital input to the all round development of these athletes, you will spot new talent, encourage it and at times protect it against social, community and poor athletic practice. You will be the reason that athletes stay and develop in our sport’ . He concluded by detailing the AAI coach education ladder which was developed as part of the association’s coaching strategy and how the pool of coaches was increasing in answer to the ever increasing new generation of athletic talent.
