There was success for Liam, Joanne and Paul Hession today while there was disappointment for Paul Brizzel and Gary Ryan. See below for details as they happened on the day. (21.27pm)
Dissapointment for Paul Brizzel as he pulls up injured in his 200m heat. (19:03pm) Paul Hession has qualified for the semi-final of the 200m by coming third in his heat in a time of 20.80, 0.1 faster than his efforts in the opening round. (18:50pm) Liam Reale had a fantastic run in the men's 1500m final to finish 8th overall in a time of 3:42.65. (18:33pm) Joanne Cuddihy has qualified for the 400m final in a PB time of 51:09. Finishing third in her semi, she becomes the first irish woman to qualify for the 400m final since Maeve Kyle did so in 1962. (18:20pm) Paul Hession who ran 20.81 (-0.5 ) to finish 2nd in his heat this morning has been drawn in lane 6 in the 2nd heat of the quarter finals at 18.42. Unfortunately Paul Brizzell who ran his fastest time for a few years in qualifying in 20.84 ( +1.8 ) this morning has drawn lane one in his quarter final which starts at 18.56. Just before the 200 metres at 18.12 Joanne Cuddihy will be endeavouring to qualify for the final of the 400 metres. Maeve Kyle in 1962 was the last Irish woman to qualify for a 400 metres final. At 18.20 Liam Reale starts in the 1500 metres final. The 1500 metres has been Ireland's top event in the European championships and Liam's qualification has been a huge accomplishment. An enthralling race is in prospect . We wish him well. (14:01pm) Gary Ryan has unfortunately not made it a clean sweep for the Irish, finishing in 7th place in his heat in a time of 21:14 and will therefore not progress to Round 2. (10:56am) Paul Hession has also safely progressed to the next round of the men's 200m finishing second in his heat in a time of 20.81 and therefore securing an automatic qualification. (10:46am) Paul Brizzel safely progressed to the next round finishing 4th and gaining automatic qualification in a seasons best time of 20.84. Paul has put the demons of the last European Championships in Munich to rest where he was obstructed by a TV camera in the 200m heat. Round 2 of this men's 200m will take place later on this evening at 5:30pm. (10.27am) The action this morning kicks off with the Irish male sprinters in the 200m. First up will be Paul Brizzel at 10:19am. (10:06am) Photos courtesy of Tim O'Dowd of the IrishRunner.com
