As part of Athletics Ireland coach education pathway, long term athlete development is a key stage in attracting new members, supporting existing ones and retaining our club athletes. This workshop sits as a CPD opportunity for those coaches interested in endurance running and working with mixed ability groups.
This workshop is designed to help club coaches support runners of all levels — with a particular focus on midlife women.
Donal Fallon, Mount Hillary A.C said of the workshop ‘It was exactly what I needed for developing a coaching program and philosophy in our club’.
These coaching workshops will provide support to coaches who are working with endurance runners training for 5K- Marathon. The workshop will provide coaches with theory and practical support which can be applied at club coaching sessions.
- IN-PERSON DAY — UNDERSTAND
Understanding the athlete and the principles that underpin effective training
Explore the whole athlete, the factors that influence how they respond and adapt to training, and what genuinely inclusive coaching looks like in a club environment.
Coaches leave able to understand the athlete in front of them and the principles that should guide their training decisions.
- ONLINE SESSION 1 — PLAN
Turning training principles into a structured, progressive plan
Learn how to organise the training year, sequence training phases and build balanced weekly plans. Coaches will begin developing a progressive plan for a real athlete, incorporating appropriate training sessions, recovery and step-back weeks.
Coaches leave able to turn training principles into a clear, progressive and realistic plan.
- ONLINE SESSION 2 — ADAPT & COACH
Taking the plan from training to race day
Learn how to guide the athlete through the final stages of their programme, including race-specific preparation and tapering, while adapting training when fatigue, recovery, injury or real life disrupts the plan.
Coaches leave more confident in knowing when to progress, when to adapt and how to make effective coaching decisions for the individual athlete.
