European 1500m champion Ciara Mageean will miss this year's 123.ie National Senior Track and Field Championships as she focuses on recovery from her gold-medal-winning exertions in Rome earlier this month.

Mageean spoke of her disappointment at missing nationals but pointed towards the importance of allowing herself to return to full health.

She said: “After careful consideration and consultation with my coaches and support team, I have decided to withdraw from the upcoming national athletics championships. This decision was not made lightly, but it is crucial to prioritize my recovery at this time.

Following the European Championships, where I experienced the brilliant high of winning gold, I have been dealing with fatigue and have not recovered fully. At this time, I need to focus on getting back to full health to ensure I can put in the hard training sessions necessary to compete with the best in the world.

I want to thank Athletics Ireland, all the fans, and sponsors for their understanding and continued encouragement. I look forward to being back on track soon, with my sights set on representing our nation with pride in Paris.

I am sorry to miss one of the highlight competitions of the Irish Athletics calendar. Thank you for your support and patience.”

We wish Ciara the best with her recovery and can’t wait to see our European champion back in the green singlet soon.
