Mageean makes no excuses

Ciara Mageean (UCD) was in no mood for excuses as she finished 13th in a high-quality 1500m in 4:10.60 on the first day of action at the IAAF World Championships in London.

The UCD athlete was in heat 1 of the women’s 1500m with six to qualify from each heat to the semi-final. Mageean’s heat was won by world record holder Genzebe Dibaba (Ethiopia) in 4:02.67 followed by Caster Semenya (South Africa) in 4:02.84. Mageean needed a time of 4:05.48 or faster to advance.

Mageean had this to say on her performance: “Everything has been going good. I don’t know what the story is. I’m not looking for an excuse and I knew I could make it through that round so I’ve no excuses for that."
