Mark English (Finn Valley AC) smashed the Irish 1000m record last night at the Ostrava Golden Spike, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, in Czechia.

The Donegal man clocked a time of 2:15.82 to finish sixth in a highly competitive race, won by Peter Bol (Australia) in 2:15.13.

The previous record of 2:16.40 had been held by Luke McCann (UCD AC) since August 2022.

Four other Irish athletes were also in action. Sharlene Mawdsley (Newport AC) produced the second fastest time of her career in the Women’s 400m to finish third in 50.28 seconds.

In the Men’s Mile, Nick Griggs (Candour Track Club) was ninth in a season’s best time of 3:52.81. This was his second fastest ever time for the distance. Emma Moore (Galway City Harriers) was also ninth in the Women’s 800m, her time of 2:00.71 obliterated her personal best (2:01.21) by half a second and is an Irish U23 outdoor record. Maeve O’Neill (Doheny AC) holds the outright record, with her 2:00.33 set indoors.

Bori Akinola (UCD AC) was sixth in the Men’s 100m in 10.38 (0.0).
