MASTERS CHANNEL APELDOORN INSPIRATION IN ATHLONE

The national athletics schedule returned to the TUS International Arena in Athlone today for the 123.ie National Masters Indoor Championships (March 8th). There were a host of impressive performances with several new names on the national honours lists.

Isaiah Adeaknmbi M35 (Riverstick/Kinsale AC) was the fastest of the sprinters on the day, posting a 7.31 to claim the 60m gold. Snezana Bechtina W40 (Clonliffe Harriers AC) lived up to favouritism in the women’s race, closing a leading time of 8.07.

Brian Boyce M45 (An Ríocht AC) was hugely impressive over 400m, securing gold in 53.32. The 800s were a compelling watch with Dean Ryan M35 (Newbridge AC) 2:03.11 and Annette Quaid W45 (Leevale AC) 2:18.48 looking particularly sharp on their way to their respective titles.

Lynsey Brown W40 (Lagan Valley AC) 11.21 and Aidan Gillespie M50 (Rosses AC) 9.44 took gold over the hurdles, while in the 1500m it was Martin Cox M40 (Unattached) who posted the fasted time of the day with 4:21.72.

Plant Based AC had a day to remember with Rachel Murphy W40 (10:18.21) and Lea Fulcher M50 (9:15.19) both walking away as 3000m champions in their respective races.

The 3000m Walk saw Brian O’Domhnaill M45 (Kilybegs AC) post 14:32.48 on his way to gold.

Alison Beck W45 (Dundrum South Dublin AC) made the trip to Athlone all the more worthwhile by taking gold in the high jump (1.35m) and pole vault (2.20m). Alan Delaney M40 (Killarney Valley AC) was best of the men over the vertical jump thanks to his1.75 clearance.

Jennifer Doyle W40 (Roscommon AC) and Niall Counihan M35 (Bilboa AC) collected gold of their own in the long jump competition, while leading favourite Olga Nedvede W40 (Dooneen AC0 secured yet another national title thanks to her best throw of 11.89m in the women’s shot.
