Morland sizzles in Santry
Cushinstown’s Elizabeth Morland was the star of the show at the GloHealth National Combined Events in Santry which also incorporated the AAI Games on Sunday (May 29).
Morland’s heptathlon score of 5545 points saw her break national junior, U23 and senior records and qualify her for the World Junior Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland later this summer. It bettered Kelly Proper’s (Ferrybank) 2013 record of 5442 points set in Florence.
The Meath schoolgirl's marks were: 100m hurdles - 13.92; high jump - 1.70m; shot put - 10.53m; 200m - 24.95; long jump - 5.75m; javelin - 39.84m; 800m - 2:21.22.
Trim’s Shane Aston won the senior men’s title with; 6398 points with Rolus Olusa (Donore Harriers) second with a personal best score of 6222 and Mark Rodgers (St Peter’s) third with 5291. Guest Liam Ramsay of Sheffield scored the highest tally of the day with 7521 points.
Michael Surman (City of Derry Spartans) won the junior category with 5499 points. Jonathan McKenna won the (St Laurence O’Toole) won the Youths category with 5683 points with Tadhg Murtagh (Kildare) second with 4295 points.
Naomi Morgan (City of Derry Spartans) won the senior women’s title with a score of 4409 points followed by Karen Dunne (Bohermeen) on 3981 points and Snezana Bechtina (Clonliffe Harriers) with 3741 points. Best in the youth category was Katherine O’Connor (Dundalk St Gerard’s) with 5074 points. Liscarroll’s Vickie Cusack was second with 4443 points and Anne Corcoran (Ferrybank) third with 4403 points.

Kelly speeds to impressive 800m; Adam King of the Throws
Kieran Kelly (Raheny Shamrock) was one of the highlight performers on the track in the AAI Games with a 1:49.17 clocking in the men’s 800m. Alanna Lally (UCD) was a comfortable winner in the women’s race with 2:11.87.
There were some impressive performances in the throws. Adam King’s (Iveragh) fine season continues and he threw the 6kg hammer out to 70.48m – a world junior A standard. Brendan O’Donnell (Lifford Strabane) threw the 5kg hammer 67.55m for a European Youth qualifying distance. Padraig White (Dunboyne) and Killian Barry (Crusaders) were in good form also with the senior weight of 7.26kg. White recorded 63.92m with Barry out to 61.08m.
Clare Fitzgerald (Tralee Harriers) had a big personal best in the women’s discus with 52.59m and is edging closer to the European Athletics Championships qualifying standard and pool.
