The Indoor Season Got Under Way Today With The Munster Open Senior and Junior Championships in Nenagh. Ireland’s leading walkers, with an array of national titles and records between them, recorded an impressive double. Both men’s and women’s races were held together and featured Olympians Gillian O’Sullivan from Farranfore Maine Valley and Robert Heffernan from Togher. Both athletes went straight to the lead in their respective events and both were intent on a good post Christmas blow-out. Both expressed delight with their winning performances and pledged to return next Sunday for the AAI Games. This was Gillian’s first real competitive outing in two and a half years after injury and illness forced her onto the sidelines. Her short term target is the qualifying standard for the World championships in Japan in August. Heffernan is another to put injury and illness behind him, although he experienced more frustration in recent days. He had planned to compete in an indoor 5,000m in Russia this weekend, but, after travelling to London, he was unable to travel any further because he did not have a visa. The whole affair cost him in the region of €1,000. After the AAI Games he heads off for some warm weather training as part of his build up to the World championships for which he has a qualifying standard. Kelly Proper from Ferrybank set a new CBP in the jnior long jump with a best effort of 5.81, a big improvement on the old record of 5.63 which she also held.
