A new National U20 110m hurdles record from Adam Nolan (Scoil Chonglais) signed off a wonderful two days of athletics action at the 2023 edition of the 123.ie All Ireland Schools’ Track and Field Championships which took place in Tullamore across June 2nd and 3rd.

The St Laurance O’Toole athlete posted a stunning 13.70 to smash his own U20 110mH record (13.89) which he had posted at the Leinster Championships in Carlow just last week.

Nolan wasn’t finished there either, with the Carlow athlete also going on to claim gold in the Long Jump with a best of 6.74m.

There were a host of outstanding individual performances across the day, including that of Freya Bateman (Mount Mercy Cork) in the Minor Girls 800m which saw the young Cork athlete clock a superb 2:08.99CR, a time which would also have bettered the Junior and Intermediate 800m Championships Records.

The Minor Boys race also provided a record-breaking performance from young Sean Riordan of St Colmans Fermoy who clocked an impressive 2:02.97CR. 

The first track titles of the day included gold for Anna Gardiner (Assumption GS) in a stacked Senior Girls 3,000m which was won in a time of 9:42.42. Louise O`Mahoney (Col Muire Ennis) went with Gardiner for much of the race, ultimately settling for silver in 9:43.55 with Avril Millerick (St Marys Midleton) third in 9:57.12.

The Inter Girls 3,000m also provided one of today’s standout performances with Clodagh Gill (St Marys College Ballina) storming clear of Emily Bolton (Mount Sackville) over the final few laps to cross in a winning time of 9:49.82.

Away from Nolan’s exploits in the 110m hurdles, the long hurdles also delivered much excitement throughout the day with brothers Fintan Dewhirst (Senior Boys St Columbas Glenties 55.19) and Ethan Dewhirst (St Columbas Glenties 56.09) both picking up gold in their respective races.

The sprint events were a compelling watch for those in attendance with ultra-impressive performances from Rus Veikune (Inter Boys Campbell Col Belfast 10.89 CR), Sophie Parlour (Senior Girls Thornhill College Derry 12.43), and Sean Aigboboh (Senior Boys High School 10.67).

The ‘one-lap-wonders’ took to the track in the hottest of the conditions this afternoon and it was Niamh Murray (Loreto Dalkey), fresh from her European indoors selection, who looked all class in taking the Senior Girls 400m title in 55.11 from a fast-finishing Holly Kilroe in second.

David Bosch (Wesley College 48.28) claimed gold in the Senior Boys 400m which provided one of the finishes of the day with Joe Doody (CBC Monkstown 48.48) and David Mannion (Seamount College Kinvara          48.61) in contention right to the line.     

Sean Cronin (Col Ghlor na Mara) stamped his class on the Inter Boys 1500m to cross in 3:58.08, while the senior titles went to Lughaidh Mallon (Rathmore Belfast) and Hannah Kehoe (Loreto Kilkenny 4:34.16) who continue to look excellent prospects for the future.

The final individual track medal of the day went the way of rising endurance star Jonas Stafford (East Glendalough) with the Wicklow athlete crossing in 14:45.95 ahead of the consistent Billy Coogan (CBS Kilkenny 14:58.67).

There was wall-to-wall action in the field events across the eight-hour schedule which got under way with an excellent performance from Ava Rochford (Rice College Ennis) in the Senior Girls High Jump which saw her equal her PB with a 1.80m clearance which was just 0.01 off Sommer Lecky’s CR.

Michael Kent (Good Counsel New Ross 6.96m) looked hugely impressive in the Inter Boys Long Jump competition later in the day, while Una Brice (Mount Mercy Cork 3.25m) claimed yet another national title in the Pole Vault, with Joshua Fitzgerald (Colaiste Muire Crosshaven 4.53) taking the Senior Boys title.

The Senior Boys Javelin title went the way of Oisin Joyce (Ballinrobe Community School) who posted a massive 68.79CR, while Anna Gavigan (Senior Girls Discus Loreto Balbriggan 46.23) and Adrienne Gallen (Senior Girls Hammer St Columbas Stranorlar 52.93) also dominated their respective events.

This year’s championships saw over 1,000 athletes from 393 schools compete across two days of compelling athletics competition, with undoubtedly several future star unearthed.
