Spraoi Games, a multi event competition which covers the fundamentals of athletics - Run, Jump and Throw, was officially rolled out to clubs over the weekend.

Dermot McGranaghan, National Club Development Manager with Athletics Ireland, was delighted to launch the first Spraoi Games competition in Dongeal.

McGranaghan added: "This is a fantastic opportunity for children to try the different athletics events instead of specialising in one particular event too early. The Spraoi Games gives the young athletes the opportunity to try out a number of skills in a fun and supportive environment. It's a huge opportunity also for clubs to roll this concept out within their own clubs on training nights".

"Spraoi Games ticks all the boxes for a fun, multi-event environment and can be held indoors or outdoor" he added.

Sunday’s roll out was held at the fabulous facilities at Finn Valley AC, where six Donegal clubs, Finn Valley AC, Rosses AC, Tír Chonaill AC, Killybegs AC, Olympian Young AC and Milford AC came together to launch this very exciting children's competition.

"The feedback from the coaches, parents, and most importantly, the young athletes was very positive. They are all really excited to get this going within their own clubs" McGranaghan said.

Athletics Ireland plan to roll out several more pilot events in Dublin and Carlow over the coming weeks, details of which will be released in due course.
