Rose Anne Galligan brought her Freshman year at Tennessee University to a close with another excellent performance at the NCAA championships in Sacramento California. Finishing eight in her heat of the 1,500m she clocked 4:21.60, just a second off qualification for the final. She has enjoyed a terrific year in the States with top notch performances in cross country, indoor and outdoor seasons. Over the past weeks she has reduced her times over 800m to 2:06.68 and 1,500m to 4:17.20 and has obviously benefited in no small way from her experience. A large contingent of Irish middle distance athletes head for Manchester tonight for the BMC / Nike Grand Prix, with qualification for upcoming championships high on the aganda. David McCarthy, after setting a new PB last weekend, is again in action in the 800m, while Maura Prendiville and Ciara Everard contest the women’s 800m races. John Coghlan is an interesting entry in the 1,500m, with Emmett Dunleavy, Martin Conroy, Daire Bermingham and Patrick McCartan also amongst the entries. Orla Drumm is another who is gradually lowering her PB for 1,500m. She raced in Germany mid week and clocked 4:18.24 for the distance. The Ffrench O’Carroll twins Rebecca and Charlotte are also amongst the entries. Gary Murray, Gary Thornton, Brian Maher and Mark Christie are all entered in the A 5,000m, while the B race has Joe Sweeney, Mark Hanrahan and Richard Yeates all chasing the European under 23 standard.
