CHAMPIONSHIP RECORDS HAMMERED IN TULLAMORE

7 July 2024

The future stars of Irish athletics served up a superb day of competition on day 1 of the 123.ie National Juvenile Track and Field Championships which took place in Tullamore today (July 7th).

The hurdles, 600/800m, steeplechase, and field events dominated day 1 of this year’s championships with a host of championship records falling across the action-packed day.

One of the rising stars of Irish throws continued his remarkable season in the hammer cage this afternoon, with the now familiar name of Thomas Williams (Shercock AC) adding almost SEVEN meters to the championships record which had stood since 2011 with a superb 72.91m throw to claim gold in the U17 hammer competition.

Caoimhe Gallen (Lifford Strabane) was also in superb form in the hammer, picking up the U18 title with best throw of 59.73m which was just off her sister Adrienne’s 60.90 championship record.

Enya Silkena (Ratoath AC) was another of the throwers in record-breaking form today, posting a new 47.40 CR in the U18 javelin competition as she finalises preparations for the upcoming European Athletics Championships in Slovakia later this month.

There was plenty of highlights across today’s track action too with Caolan McFadden (Cranford AC) taking a stacked boys U18 800m title in 1:54.17ahead of Odhrán O’Sullivan (Midleton AC) 1:54.57 and John Delaney (St. Abbans AC) 1:55.85.

There was a Leevale 1-2 in the U19 girls 800m with Claire Crowley (2:13.05) leading home teammate Nicole Dinan (2:14.56), while Pia Langton (Kilkenny City Harriers) was all class in the U18 race, crossing in a winning time of 2:10.82.

Performance of the day in the steeplechase went to Matei Ursachi of Clonliffe Harriers who clocked a championship record of 9:33.48 on his way to gold in the U18 3000 steeple.

The hurdles provided much excitement throughout the morning session with impressive performances from Des O’Neill (Raheny Shamrock) in the U18 110m hurdles race (14.71), and Orlaith Mannion (South Galway AC) who took away gold in the girls U18 100m hurdles race in 13.99.

Cameron McCracken (North Down AC) managed to break the championship record in the heats of the U17 110m hurdles (13.50), before going on to better the time on his way to gold in the final with a 13.44 CR.
