McCann and Derese win national half titles

Angela McCann (Clonmel) and Yared Derese (Carrick Aces) starred at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin half marathon to win the national titles on offer in the Phoenix Park this morning (August 11).

McCann proved once more that age is only but a number and the F45 athlete rolled back the years to win the national half marathon championship in 80:10 ahead of new up-and-coming runners Niamh Clifford (Star of the Laune) in 80:33 and Aisling O’Connor (Edenderry) 81:40.

There was a first national title for Yared Derese (Carrick Aces) in the men’s race, winning in 64:58. Derese made his winning break at the 7-mile mark when he separated himself from long-time leader Mick Clohisey (Raheny Shamrock) who had to settle for second in 65:36.

Hugh Armstrong (Ballina) rounded out a strong podium in third in 66:10 – good running with the windy conditions and hilly sections on the route. Clohisey and Armstrong are building towards the Dublin marathon in October which doubles up as the national championships.
