Santry to host schools' cross to savour

The cream of schools’ talent will compete at the Irish Life Health All Ireland Schools Cross Country Championships in Santry Demesne tomorrow (March 7).

Qualifiers from Ulster, Connacht, Munster and Leinster will descend upon the wonderful venue that is adjoined to Morton Stadium and Clonliffe Harriers will be providing their excellent services once more in the running of the event.

The 8-race programme kicks off at 12pm with the minor girls’ 2,000m and should provide the perfect start to an action-packed day. The senior girls’ race increases in distance this year to 3,500m which is a welcome addition. Niamh O’Mahony (Presentation Tralee) and Lucy Holmes (Ard Scoil na nDeise) will be among those looking to make their mark in the senior girls’ ranks.

The senior boys’ 6,000m race will have good competition on both the team and individual front. It looks likely to be a battle between St Malachy’s Belfast and Belvedere College for the team title but of course that can all change on the day. Shay McEvoy (St Kieran’s Kilkenny) and Michael Morgan (Summerhill College) will be two of the individual contenders.

Each race will provide it’s own excitement with sure bets and surprises in store. It’s recommended that athletes register an hour before their event in Morton Stadium and then you can walk in through to gain access to the park.
