Fionnuala Britton (21 ) became the latest addition to the list of qualifiers for the European Championships in Gothenburg when she finished 5th in a quality 3000 metres steeplechase in Belgium on Monday in a time of 9.53.61. The time is some 13 seconds quicker than her previous best of 10.06.26 and well inside the 10.05.00 qualifying time for Gothenburg. This is a significant breakthrough for the Sli Chulainn , Co Wicklow athlete who is a student at DCU. The winner for the 2nd time of the Flora Women's Mini Marathon was Pauline Curley, Tullamore Harriers. Pauline who has represented Ireland on the track over 5000 metres and several cross country championships was a previous winner of this phenomenal event in 2003. Niamh O'Sullivan and Orla O'Mahony both of whom are cross country internationals took the runners up spots.Some 40,000 took part in this extraordinary event which is annually organised by the Dundrum South Dublin club. A seasonal debut in Gava, Spain for Ailis McSweeney produced 11.86 ( +5.1 ) for the 100 metres and 24.96 ( +1.8 ) for the 200 metres. In Schwechat Austria Darragh Graham had a seasonal best for 200 metres as he finished 3rd in 21.79 ( +0.7 ) and 1112 ( 0.0 ) for the 100 metres.In Germany Orla Drumm finished 4th in an 800 metres in a personalbest of 2.08.91. A fine performance inadvertently omitted from our summary of the Kit Kat Irish Schools' was the intermediate girls 3000 metres record by Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll in 9.50.08
