Kate O’Connor has added another medal to her haul, claiming gold in the heptathlon at the Commonwealth Games for Northern Ireland on Wednesday evening in Glasgow.
The 25-year-old upgraded the silver she won at the event in Birmingham in 2022 with a 6569 points tally that included first-place finishes and Games heptathlon bests in the javelin and 800m.
O’Connor started her bid for the title with a 13.54 clocking in the 100m hurdles, before clearing 1.82m in the high jump.
The evening session on day one proved tricky, with the shot put taking place during spells of heavy rain. O’Connor was well off her best in the event, throwing 12.85m, but bounced back in the 200m, clocking the fastest time of 24.14 seconds into a -0.5m/s headwind.
With improved weather on day two, O’Connor completed a strong long jump competition with her best of 6.37m coming on the third and final attempt.
A throw close to her personal best in the javelin ensured the pressure was off in the 800m, but O’Connor still claimed the win in both events to round out the competition on a high.

O’Connor will now focus on the European Championships taking place in Birmingham from 10-16 August.

Anna McCauley finished in 8th position on 5994 points and achieved personal bests in the 100m hurdles and long jump and was very close to a third in the 800m where she pushed O’Connor all the way to achieve a Northern Irish 1-2 in the event.
The leaderboard was tight with only 11 points separating fourth to eighth.
Nick Griggs and Callum Morgan will both compete at the Games in the 5000m final on Saturday evening.
