Ireland's Kate O'Connor has won a historic heptathlon silver at the European Under-20 Athletics Championships in Boras, Sweden on this evening (July 19th).

O'Connor needed a big performance in the final event, the 800m, which went off in pouring rain. She absolutely emptied the tank, battling to third to take overall second behind Spaniard Maria Vicente.

The Newry 18-year-old set a new national record at the IAAF Combined Events Challenge in Italy back in April and has now carved herself into Irish athletics history.

It's the first time Ireland have medalled in the heptathlon at any level.
