Sprinting Legend Merlene Ottey has confirmed her participation in next month’s Celtic Cup
at Grangemouth Stadium. She is one of several international athletes who will guest in the match between Scotland, Wales, Ireland and a Bank of Scotland Development Team at the prestigious meeting that will take place on Thursday 17 August. Jamaican-born Ottey, who now competes for Slovenia, where she resides, has a glittering CV including eight Olympic medals and fourteen World Championship medals. Although now 46, she has still clocked a swift 11.42 for 100m this year and will provide a stern test for Scottish sprinters. She has also confirmed that she will compete at the Sunday Mail National Championships at Scotstoun Stadium, Glasgow the preceding weekend. Former Olympic and World silver medallist James Beckford is the latest name to sign up as a guest athlete for next month’s Celtic Cup. The Jamaican long jumper took silver at the 1996 Atlanta Games, silver at both the 1995 and 2003 IAAF World Championships and silver at the 2004 IAAF World Indoor Championships. His personal best is a mighty 8.62m, his best so far this summer is 8.25m. He joins sprinting great Merlene Ottey on the guest list for the match between Scotland, Ireland, Wales and a Bank of Scotland Development Team which will be televised live by BBC Scotland. - AAI and scottishathletics members: 1000 seats in the main stand have been allocated FREE to members of AAI and scottishathletics on a first-come-first-served basis. Each member will be allowed a maximum of two tickets each. To guarantee your place, email: celticcuptickets@scottishathletics.org.uk with your name, postal address and membership number.
- Clubs: Scottish clubs can get involved by entering athletes into the ScottishPower Celtic Club Athletics (details below). FREE tickets to the Celtic Cup will be available to all competitors. There is also a travel grant available to those clubs filling coaches to bring athletes and supporters to Grangemouth, more details available by contacting scottishathletics Club Services Manager, Ryan Montgomery.
- Family Fun Day: Particpants in the ScottishPower Youth Festival including a Junior Fun Run and "Come and Try" sporting pursuits will also receive FREE tickets.
- Non-members/general public: Tickets to at ground level are available FREE (maximum of 4 tickets per application) by e-mailing celticcuptickets@scottishathletics.org.uk
