Athletics Ireland has launched it's Primary Teacher Summer Courses to run in a series of venues around the country during July. Application form can be downloaded here: Teachers Course Application Form. Teachers will have the opportunity to earn the Athletic Leader certificate on Day 1 and 2. The Athletic Leader will assist teachers to introduce children to athletics through fun based activities with the aim of developing physical literacy. Physical literacy refers to the ABC's of movement - Agility, Balance and Co-ordination - and focuses on the FUNdamental stage of the Long Term Athlete Development model. Teachers will spend Days 3, 4 and 5 earning Level 1 certification as an athletics coach. The level 1 course is focused on the learning to train stage on the LTAD pathway. Coaches working at this stage will continue to develop the fundamental skills of the athlete. Fun and participation are still the main aims of the course. The crucial development at the “learning to train” stage is the development of sports specific skills, learning the correct posture, movements of all running, jumping and throwing events.
