Preview - Results Meath Hill Running - Paddy Hyland Memorial 10k Preparations are well under way for one of the biggest annual sports events on Dublin's northside - the AXA Raheny 5 road race scheduled for Sunday, January 27th, 2008 at 3pm. Organised by Raheny Shamrock Athletic Club, the race is now in its 24th year. Founded by Olympic marathoner Pat Hooper, the event has grown in size and stature over the years and up to 2,000 athletes are expected to compete in this month's festival of races. The event will form a major part of the Raheny Shamrock's golden jubilee celebrations in 2008. Perhaps the most notable feature of the race during the last quarter of a century has been its usefulness as a form guide for the National Inter club cross country championships a few weeks later. Invariably individuals who run well in Raheny also finish near the top of the leader board in the blue riband cross country event. Last year's winner Joe Sweeney, for example, subsequently finished third in the Inter-clubs. In 2006 Raheny clubman Vinny Mulvey completed the double, winning both the Raheny 5 and the National Cross country title. Sidelined with injury for much of last year Mulvey is showing signs of recapturing his best form again and will be one of the favourites on January 27th. The race begins at 3pm with the walkers setting off ten minutes earlier. The entry fee is ?15, with entry on the day costing ?20. Participants can enter on line at www.rahenyshamrock,com. at no extra cost. Athletes can also enter at the AXA Insurance office, 4 Main Street, Raheny while there is mobile registration available at most races in Dublin during the next few weeks. There will be prizes for the first ten finishers in both senior men and women, as well as the first three vets in all categories. There will also be prizes for the first three juniors as well as the usual team prizes. All finishers receive a high quality plaque. There will be two juvenile races as well. The Raheny 800m will cater for the 8 to 12 year olds while the Raheny 1 mile race is for 13-16 year olds. These races begin at 2.15 and 2.30pm respectively. Entry fee is ?5 and all finishers receive a medal. The nominated charity for the 2008 race is St. Francis Hospice in Raheny.
