One New Irish Record and a host of new PB's by Irish athletes over the weekend - Road Race win for Mark Carroll - Phoros added
A wet and dull day in Glasgow contrasted with sweltering heat at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. Highlights of the Leinster championships included a throw of 69.34m (2cm outside her owh Irish record!) by Eileen O'Keeffe to win the hammer and the 47.62 clocking by Gordon Kennedy to win the 400m. But the weekend belongs to Paul Hession for smashing the national 100m record in Greece.
Hession Smashes Irish 100m Record in Greece Paul Hession of Athenry AC became the fastest ever Irishman over 100m in Kalamata. Greece on Saturday night (2nd June). Hession won the 100m in a time of 10.28 to smash Paul Brizzels previous record of 10.35 set in 2000 in Haapsalu, Finland. This was Hession’s first race of the season and he also won the 200m later in the evening just short of his personal best when running 20.67. He ran 20.56 in Malmo last season. This now means that Hession has qualified for both the 100m and 200m at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan in August. He will race next in Stavanger, Norway on June 13th and will follow this up on June 15th with an appearance at the prestigious Golden League meeting in Oslo.
