Keep fit with the Midland Running League during May! We are all aware of the benefits of exercise and participation in sport and judging from the fantastic response received from the people of Westmeath and the midlands in recent weeks, it is expected that large numbers will participate in the first round of the 2007 Midland Running League in Belvedere House, Gardens & Park, Mullingar on Wednesday May 2nd at 7.30pm. The League, an all-inclusive event aimed at increasing participation in running, jogging and walking in Westmeath and the midlands is a joint initiative between Mullingar Harriers Athletic Club and Westmeath Sports Partnership and is supported by funding from the Irish Sports Council under the Women in Sport Programme. It is also an AAI approved event. On each Wednesday during May, there will be a five kilometre fun run and walk in Belvedere on a scenic course around the Earls Trail on the shore of Lough Ennell. The start and finish area are both within the Belvedere estate. Registration will take place at the Visitor Centre in Belvedere on Wednesday May 2nd from 6.00pm. Entries will also be taken on any of the subsequent evenings (May 9th, 16th, 23rd & 30th). The entry fee is €15 for the series, which covers the five events and includes a souvenir t-shirt for each participant, or €5 per event. There will be a presentation ceremony after the final event on May 30th with lots of category and spot prizes to be won. The overall winner will receive the Pat Finnerty Perpetual Trophy to commemorate Pat Finnerty (R.I.P.), past Chairperson of Mullingar Harriers who committed so much time to athletics in Westmeath. The aim of the Midland Running League is to promote participation in sport and physical activity. Fully endorsed by the Irish Sports Council, the League caters for runners, joggers and walkers of all ages and abilities. A fun event with the emphasis on participation rather than competition the organisers are encouraging as many as possible to take part. It is ideal preparation for ladies who are participating in the forthcoming women’s mini-marathon, and with the event open to children aged 12 and over is a fun way for the entire family to participate in sport. Last year the Midland Running League was a great success when it took place on a road circuit at Ladestown, Mullingar and a record 170 runners, joggers and walkers from Westmeath and all around the midlands took part. Spurred on by the recent feature on by the Pobal programme on RTE1, enquiries for this year’s event have been coming in thick and fast and the organisers are hoping that this will be reflected in the turnout. The Organising Committee are appealing to the people of Westmeath and the Midlands to support this event, it is a great fun and social way to participate in sport and explore the beauty of one of our finest visitor attractions simultaneously. So why not come to Belvedere House, Gardens & Park on the Wednesday evenings of May, you will not be disappointed!
