Ava Rochford (Nenagh Olympic) and Niamh Murray (Bray Runners) have progressed through the opening rounds of their respective high jump and 400m events at the European U18 Championships in Jerusalem this morning.
Rochford enjoyed a superb round of jumping, clearing all attempts from 1.63m to 1.77m to secure her place in the high jump final on Wednesday (5.15pm Irish time).
Murray ran a superb race in the final 400m heat, crossing in 55.79q for third place to secure one of the fastest qualifier places for Tuesday’s semi-final (7.40am Irish time).
Kirsti Foster (Willofield Harriers) ran a brave race in heat 2 of the 1500m to finish 8th, with the top 6 fastest times all coming from her heat. Foster crossed in 4.35.12 to miss out on progressing by just one place.
Jack Kelly (Tallaght AC) finished 5th in his 800m heat (1:56.14), while Neil Culhane (Ace AC) missed out on progressing from those same 800m heats by an agonising .14 of a second. Culhane ran a brilliant race to finish 3rd in his heat in 1:54.46.
