The highlight of the Irish performances today had to be Deirdre Ryan’s impressive first time clearance at 1.92m equalling her National Record which she set earlier this summer. This gave her automatic qualification for the final to be held on Friday at 5:30pm where she will face the home favourite Kajsa Bergqvist amongst others. Another fine performance today was that of Joanne Cuddihy in round one of the women’s 400m where she finished 2nd in her heat (5th overall) in a time of 51:41, just .13 off her PB (51:28) which she set earlier this summer at the Woodies’ National Senior Championships. In the distance events, Martin Fagan finished a worthy 11th place in the 10,000m with a time of 28:54.04 just 12.63 seconds off his PB, in what was his first senior international competition. Martin will also contest the 5,000m alongside Alistair Cragg on Thursday at 4:40pm. Elsewhere there was disappointment for the remaining sprinters where they failed to advance further. David Gillick was 7th in his semi-final with a time of 46:84, Anna Boyle was 5th in her 100m heat with a time of 11:60 and Emily Maher did not start in the 100m after suffering a hamstring injury in her warm-up. We look forward to another exciting day of athletics tomorrow.
