Patrick Sheridan (Newcastle AC) and Elizabeth Gahan (Dublin City Harriers AC) made history on Sunday (September 20th), becoming the first winners of the Athletics Ireland National One Mile Road Championships.
The inaugural championships were incorporated into the 2026 Griffith Avenue Mile in Dublin, marking the first time a national championship has been held over the one-mile distance.
Sheridan produced a superb performance to claim the historic first men’s title, stopping the clock at 4:07.
The Newcastle AC athlete had little room for error in a tightly contested men’s race, with Lucas Ryan (Crusaders AC) and Kevin McGrath (Bohermeen AC) both finishing just one second behind in 4:08.
GAHAN TAKES WOMEN’S TITLE
Elizabeth Gahan (Dublin City Harriers AC) claimed the inaugural women’s crown with an impressive 4:38 performance.
Gahan led home Niamh Kelly (Clonliffe Harriers AC), who secured silver in 4:47, while Charlotte Myers (Crusaders AC) completed the national podium with a 4:49 finish.
The championship formed part of the Griffith Avenue Mile, which has established itself as one of the standout mile road races on the Irish calendar since its revival in 2019.
The flat and fast Griffith Avenue course provided the setting for a new chapter in Irish road running, with Sunday’s championship adding the mile to Athletics Ireland’s programme of national road championships.
