Brilliant weather got the Irish track and field season off to a flying start as the Irish Universities championships were staged at a sun drenched Morton Stadium Santry.
Host college DCU provided a good share of impressive winners, with World cross country heroine Fionnuala Britton taking home double gold in the steeplechase and 5,000m. Fellow student Mark Christie did likewise with runaway victories in the 5,000m and 10,000m.
Eoin Everard, returning from injury, had an easier than expected win in the 800m, while Danny Darcy made things tough for himself by allowing Paul Pollock build up a big lead before reeling him in with 300m remaining to win the 1,500m. DCU also won the men’s 4x400m with Michael O’Sullivan anchoring in 48.8 to give them maximum points.
Eileen O’Keeffe showed that her preparations for the season are well advanced with wins in the hammer and discus, while Denis Finnegan from UCC was a good winner of the triple jump.
Mark Kirwan led from start to finish to win the steeplechase easily, while Orla Drumm took the honours in the 800m and 1,500m.
