Success at European Championships and Olympics Games drives membership to an all-time high in 2024

21 October 2024

Athletics Ireland registration figures at the end of September shows an annual increase of 8%. “The brilliant work by clubs throughout the country along with the huge success of our athletes at this years European Championships and Olympic Games is the driving force behind this membership increase” believes Dermot McGranaghan, Athletics Ireland Club Development Manager.

He adds, “with the introduction of the 3-year Club Development plan in 2023, clubs are increasingly better structured and able to plan for membership increases and indeed create a roadmap for the years ahead”.

Top of the list on membership is Dundrum South Dublin AC, having broken through the 1100 barrier.  They are closely followed by Blackrock AC (Dublin) with 846 and in third place is another Dublin club Raheny Shamrock AC with 837 members.

Connacht club Galway City Harriers AC with 817 members is fourth, Clonliffe Harriers AC, Dunboyne AC, Metro St. Brigid’s AC, Lusk AC, Lucan Harriers AC and Bandon AC complete the top ten.

Other notable membership increases sees Glaslough Harriers AC with an incredible 33% jump while Kenmare AC, Westport AC, South Sligo AC, Fethard AC, Kilcoole AC, Dublin Front Runners and Clonakilty Juveniles AC performed strongly in the September figures.
